Being Dog Aware
Jacinta Philips, mother of three year old twins has written a leaflet "Dog Aware". She wrote it because of her deep concerns over the deaths of young children being attacked by their family dog. Her concern was that these incidents seem to be happening more often, especially at this time of year. Her local Sure Start Children's Centre in Newcastle under Lyme in Safffordshire helped her to create a booklet, as well as a number of experts. The book has helpful and practical advice for dog management in a family setting. With funding from Staffordshire County Council Community Watchdog who thought it was a good "new look" awareness leaflet, they had 10,000 copies printed.
The eight page booklet contains handy information on what to think about when you introduce a dog into the family, things that the dog will need. Safety for your dog in the home, how children should respect their new pet. Signs that a dog may make when it is happy, excited, afriad and angry. Included on the back are a number of handy contact numbers, including one for the Young Kennel Club who welcome all young dog fans between the ages of 6 and 24.
