Twins 22 years after vasectomy

PROUD dad Steven Richardson cradles his miracle twins – born 22 YEARS after he had a vasectomy.
Steven, 50, thought he could not have kids with second wife Carol after a reverse snip op failed.

But a British fertility clinic used another treatment to help the couple and the result was twins Annie and William. Image

Steven had the snip after having three children – Lee, now 33, Lisa, 27, and Nicola, 23 – during his first marriage.

He met Carol, 37, in 1994 and they married in 1998.

After the reverse operation failed, he was referred to the Manchester CARE fertility clinic – who tried an op called ICSI, or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection.

They extracted sperm from his testicles, fertilising one of Carol’s eggs IVF-style, and then implanted the embryos.

The chances of success were slim because of his age and scarring after the snip. But the treatment worked after two tries in November 2006.

Carol said: “It seems like a miracle that 22 years after Steve’s vasectomy we’ve been able to have our twins. “I had always wanted to be a mother, and against all the odds, we have our beautiful twins and I’m a mum at last.”

Steven added: “When my reversal failed we were devastated. But the other procedure did work and now we are over the moon.”  Dr Rashmi Patel, who treated the couple, said: “We were very happy to help Carol and Steven.”
